NOVE MESTO part 1

Hello, this week we had a stroll around Nove Mesto, it is the largest of Prague's cadastral districts so we have divided it into 3 parts which we will cover in the following weeks. This week we cover the area along the river from Albertov to Resslova. Starting with Albertov, it was where I went in Nov 17 2009 to follow the students and a wide range of Czech citizenry on the march that students participated in on the same day in 1989 and it was very exciting and the atmosphere was electric especially when we were confronted by a group of neo-Nazis close to the river.

Nove Mesto is also significant to me as it was the first place where I lived when I first came to Prague back in 1999 to start my 1 month TEFL course and an area where I used to hang out and there have been a lot of changes to the area and I have to say for the better, so part of the blog was like a walk down memory lane for me.

One interesting piece of information that my SVG manged to dig out about Nove Mesto was the legend of the St Stephen's bell. During the Hussite war in the 1420's which was also famous for the extensive use of hand held gunpowder weapons which I can only assume means very dangerous guns, well not stating the obvious I mean dangerous for the user, a bell maker made a bell and the bell rang out every time a famous Hussite was executed and when the bell maker was about to be executed for having made the it he put a curse on the bell. Since then the bell has been said to ring out when an appending disaster is about to hit the city, so listen out for the bell if you are in ear's shot of St Stephen's church and also give me a bell on 555 666 999 ;-).

Other places of interest in Nove Mesto and there are a lot, are the botanical gardens, the Charles Hospital and the dock for passenger boats that take people up and down the river. There was a lot of area to cover in Nove Mesto but it was an area which I really enjoyed walking around, well except for Vaclavske Namesti at 7.00am on a Saturday morning with the drunks, pickpockets and hookahs so I hope that you get out there and discover some of the places which are not quite on the usual beaten track in the centre of Prague.

Review

The review this week was done last year so I can't accurately say what was our impression was, though I can only say with all my heart it was not a memorable one which isn't necessarily a bad thing admittedly but I will add a footnote at the end of the blog later in the week if I go back and try the menu for the second time and I am almost certain if i do then I will be trying the noodles, or alternatively i might try somewhere else, well it wasn't my first choice to be fair. It was the suggestion of my SVG who was 8 months pregnant at the time so how could I say no. It was that same thinking that got me into this situation 8 months prior it has to be said, but concerning this decision I have never looked back, well till now not. It might have something to do with the fact that I am awake, again at 4.00am (crying baby) writing this blog entry.
